How to Clean Your Shower Glass and Keep it Like New

Do you want your shower glass look like new for a long time? I will share with you a few tips on how to clean and keep it in a great condition with minimal effort.

I’ve been operating a house cleaning service company in Jacksonville, FL for a long time. Cleaning grimy kitchens, messy bedrooms, and dirty bathrooms is a manageable task. When it comes to cleaning shower glass, it gets trickier. Removing hard water stains or a soap scum build up from the shower glass is a challenging and time consuming job.

Prevent Hard Water Stains and Soap Scum Build Up on Shower Glass.

While it is easy to prevent hard water stains, many people overlook taking necessary steps. As a result, they have to deal with expensive cleaning or repair costs. Neglecting to maintain the shower glass can lead to the damage beyond repair. It is possible to remove the residue with strong cleaning solutions and some elbow grease. However, your options are limited once the glass is etched. Here are a few ways prevent soap scum build up in the future:

• Buy a squeegee and use it every time you shower. The cleaning takes only a few seconds, but it will dramatically reduce the amount of water spots and soap scum build up on the glass. Another option is to use a microfiber towel to wipe down the glass walls and door.
• Wipe shower doors with lemon oil every other week. This will prevent anything (water, soap scum, shampoo residue) from sticking to the doors.
• Treat doors with water repellent product. {This will do the same thing as the lemon oil, it’s just a different product that’s made for glass.}
• In an empty 32oz spray bottle, mix 1 cup white vinegar, 2 Tbsp Dishwasher Rinse Agent* (aka the generic brand of Jet-Dry*), fill rest of bottle with water. Spray after every shower. Rinse off with warm water and dry the glass with squeegee or cloth.
• Switch to liquid body wash. As long as you keep your bottles tipped upright so they don’t leak all over, liquid body soap will help you keep your shower free of globs of soapy messes.

How to Remove Soap Scum from Shower Glass.

Since it seems like not everyone in the household uses a squeegee to clean the glass shower enclosure, here are a few tips on how to remove soap scum:

• Use a Magic Eraser to clean glass shower doors. Follow by a rinse and squeegeeing or wiping with a microfiber towel
• Another option is to use Bar Keepers Friend* {Powder version}. Wet down the glass shower doors and a sponge, sprinkle Bar Keepers Friend on your sponge and then scrub scrub scrub. Rinse the shower doors with warm water and squeegee them dry. In addition, Bar Keepers Friend really works when it comes to cleaning the faucets. So, while you are in the shower, shine-up the faucets and door frames.
• The 50/50 vinegar and blue Dawn dish soap combination really works great.
• Squirt a toilet bowl cleaner* on wet shower doors and spread it around with a sponge. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then wet the sponge and scrub the doors. Rinse the shower doors with warm water and squeegee them dry.
• Scrape scum with a plastic putty knife. Once you remove the soap scum, rinse the shower doors with warm water and squeegee them dry.
